Tel Aviv flight drops thousands of feet after pilot stabbed in alleged terror attack

Pᴀssengers aboard a FlyDubai flight to Tel Aviv on Wednesday sprang into action after a pilot allegedly stabbed another and plunged the plane thousands of feet in an apparent attempt to crash it, in what Israeli officials are saying was an act of terror.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the intention was to “crash the plane, killing everyone on board” Flight 1073 from Dubai.

Pᴀssengers described a violent mid-air incident as the unidentified pilot allegedly stabbed the other pilot, later identified by the prime minister as Capt. Smit Machchhar, in the cockpit.

“We just heard screams, and they opened the cockpit and saw amounts of blood from someone who had simply tried to murder the pilot and stabbed him with a pocketknife. Then the plane lost control,” a pᴀssenger who identified herself as Miriam told Israeli media.

“We felt like we were, like, going to crash. I was already screaming, ‘Shema Israel’,” she added, referring to the Jewish prayer. “I can’t die, I’m my only daughter, I can’t do this to my mother.”

Netanyahu said in a statement that the plane “went into a spin and began to dive.” The pᴀssengers were predominantly Israeli citizens, he noted.

The prime minister said that even though Machchhar, who is from India, had been stabbed, he “fought back, resisted [and] opened the cockpit door.”

Netanyahu said that some pᴀssengers took a stand, referring to one he said he spoke with after the incident.

“He managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members, and together they subdued the pilot who had committed the stabbing while he was attempting to sabotage the aircraft’s systems,” Netanyahu said.

“Another flight crew member on board entered the cockpit and managed to stabilize the plane,” he added.

The flight landed in Tabuk, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, after being diverted.

“I salute the heroes on the flight from Dubai who demonstrated resourcefulness and courage. I have instructed the security establishment to prepare for potential additional threats,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also praised the pᴀssengers who stepped up and noted in his statement that investigation is still ongoing.

“According to our preliminary information, the terrorist had a single objective: to crash the plane, killing everyone on board,” he said.

Machchhar was being treated for his injuries in a hospital in Saudi Arabia and the suspect was detained, according to Israeli and Indian officials. The wounded pilot was in stable condition Wednesday night, the Indian Embᴀssy in Saudi Arabia said.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the captain of flydubai Flight 1073.

“We hope that he recovers from his injuries at the earliest. We are in touch with his family and ᴀssure them that we will continue to follow up on his health with Saudi authorities and extend all possible ᴀssistance for his wellbeing,” the embᴀssy said in a statement.

Attorney General Todd Blanche and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told reporters that the U.S. is “closely coordinating with their counterparts overseas,” stressing there are “no credible threats.”

The flight took off at 7:05 a.m. local time from Dubai, according to Flightradar24.

A Flydubai aircraft sits on the tarmac at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, Israel, September 30, 2026.

Tracking data showed the aircraft descended rapidly from 34,000 to 16,000 feet in three minutes.

“It was the full like cabin, like cabins opening and everything, like chaos screaming and just the crazy drop. Like you look at the ground and you’re like, OK, I’m going that way right now,” Mika Bauman, a pᴀssenger, told ABC News.

“I think now I can go on every roller coaster and be fine after that because that was an insane drop,” Bauman added.

About 10 minutes after the initial descent, the plane’s squawk code — used by aircraft to communicate with air traffic control — changed to “general emergency.” Seven minutes after that, the squawk code changed again, indicating a hijacking or “unlawful interference.”

The aircraft then continued to fly lower at 15,000 feet on average until it landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, about an hour to an hour and a half after the rapid descent began and the emergency signals were sent.

FlyDubai confirmed that the flight “experienced an incident while en route,” and landed in Tabuk.

One pᴀssenger expressed graтιтude that the incident was resolved.

“We jumped and helped the pilot. Friends, everything is OK now, as you can see we are landing in Saudi Arabia, you can see I am fine. That’s it. We will see in a few minutes what will happen when we land,” Itzhak Liber, a pᴀssenger, said in a video he posted on Facebook.

Pᴀssengers who experienced an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, during a flight on FlyDubai plane, arrive at Ben Gurion International Airport, near Tel Aviv, Israel, Sept. 30, 2026.

An Israeli security source confirmed to ABC News that the Israel Defense Forces recommended that a military aircraft be sent to repatriate Israeli pᴀssengers from Saudi Arabia.

However, the Saudi government refused to allow an IDF rescue flight to bring back the Israeli pᴀssengers, two Israeli sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Pᴀssengers who were on the FlyDubai aircraft bound for Israel from the United Arab Emirates, which was diverted to Saudi Arabia following an emergency signal, arrive at the Ben Gurion International Airport, near Tel Aviv, Israel, Sept. 30, 2026.

The repatriation flight landed on Wednesday evening local time, Israeli emergency services said.

“From first ᴀssessment, it appears nobody is going to need any medical treatment but we will ᴀssess them once more once they’re in the terminal,” an agency spokesman said.

💔 STELLA PARTON BREAKS HER SILENCE — What She Said About Dolly’s Health Has Fans Looking Back

Dolly Parton’s Sister Breaks Silence What Really Happened - GMT - G1

Stella Parton was born May 4, 1949, the sixth of twelve children raised by Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton in Sevierville, Tennessee — a household defined by noise, limited money, and almost no privacy, the kind of environment that produced strong, determined personalities.

Stella was one of them.

By seven, she was appearing alongside her older sister Dolly on a Knoxville television program; by her teens, she was writing her own songs, though marriage and motherhood pulled music to the margins of her life for a stretch.

The dream never fully disappeared.

Stella Parton

In 1967, she recorded a gospel album with her mother and sisters, and later worked clubs in Washington, D.C., before founding her own record label in 1975 and releasing “I Want to Hold You in My Dreams Tonight,” which climbed to number nine on the country charts.

Long before any of that commercial success, Stella had already shown a willingness to take positions others avoided.

At 26, amid backlash against Australian singer Olivia Newton-John for winning recognition in country music, Stella recorded “Ode to Olivia” in her defense — a stand that offered her no career benefit and real risk of criticism, but one she took anyway simply because she believed staying silent was the wrong choice.

That instinct defined the rest of her career: hits like “The Danger of a Stranger” and “Steady as the Rain” (written by Dolly) built a genuine, independent following, including in the U.K., while Stella also worked in New York theater and spoke openly, often controversially, about poverty, domestic violence, and the treatment of women in the music industry.

She was named the Christian Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in 2004.

Through all of it, she remained defined publicly, more often than not, as simply “Dolly’s little sister” — a label she spent five decades quietly proving didn’t tell the full story.

That same directness is why her comments in the fall of 2025 carried real weight.

Stella had never positioned herself as the family’s image manager or spokesperson; she was, by reputation, someone who believed difficult truths shouldn’t stay hidden indefinitely.

What she described wasn’t dramatic or accusatory — it was a portrait of a woman who had spent years prioritizing everyone else’s needs over her own.

The context mattered.

Carl Dean, Dolly’s husband of nearly sixty years, died in March 2025 at 82, after a long illness during which Dolly had devoted herself almost entirely to his care.

She later acknowledged that in the process, she’d neglected her own health significantly.

The loss reverberated through the whole extended family — the Partons had lost three brothers in the years surrounding this period, compounding grief that, for a family that had once crowded twelve children into a single small home, meant losing pieces of a shared childhood one after another.

Stella herself went seven years without releasing new music during this stretch, later describing the period simply as one shaped by sorrow, while still speaking about the importance of finding moments of laughter within it.

Looking back, one moment reads very differently in hindsight than it did at the time: in late September 2025, Dolly postponed her planned Las Vegas residency, citing health challenges — a rare cancellation for a performer whose six-decade career had included very few of them.

At the time, most fans treated it as a minor, temporary setback.

Stella’s later reflections suggested the signs had actually been building for some time, visible to family in ways the public smile made easy to miss.

That concern crystallized publicly not long after, when Dolly’s younger sister Frieda posted a simple request on Facebook asking fans to pray for Dolly.

What looked at first like an ordinary, well-meaning gesture spread rapidly, sparking widespread speculation about how serious Dolly’s condition actually was.

Dolly herself responded directly within days, appearing in a video from a Grand Ole Opry commercial shoot, insisting with her familiar humor that she wasn’t finished yet — the now widely remembered “I ain’t dead yet” moment that briefly quieted public concern.

In the months that followed, the pattern repeated: reassuring updates about kidney stones, dehydration, and treatment, paired with continued work on new projects, right up until Dolly Parton’s death on August 25, 2026, at 80.

Looking back across that full timeline — the postponed residency, the family’s public worry, Stella’s own account of a sister who consistently deprioritized her own wellbeing — it becomes easier to see what the people closest to Dolly understood well before the rest of the world did: that the warmth and resilience the public saw every time she appeared on camera came at a real, largely invisible cost.
