Christa Pike Was Rushed to the Hospital After Her Execution Failed — Now Tennessee Has Halted All Remaining 2026 Executions

Christa Pike Was Rushed to the Hospital After Her Execution Failed — Now Tennessee Has Halted All Remaining 2026 Executions

CHRISTA PIKE SURVIVES EXECUTION ATTEMPT AFTER TWO LETHAL INJECTIONS AND IS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, survived an attempted execution after officials administered two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Pike, 50, had been scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

Instead, the execution was halted after Pike remained alive following the administration of two doses of the drug.

According to court filings from her attorneys, Pike was reportedly still breathing and audibly snoring more than 40 minutes after the second dose. Her lawyers filed emergency motions seeking to stop the procedure and arguing that continuing it would subject her to unconsтιтutional pain and suffering.

The Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed that Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility after the attempted execution.

The department said officials had followed every step of Tennessee’s established execution protocol, which had been approved by the state’s Attorney General’s Office.

The department also said the protocol does not authorize additional procedures beyond those carried out that night.

The state’s protocol calls for a second set of syringes if an inmate has not died after the first set. However, according to the ᴀssociated Press, the protocol does not specifically explain what officials should do if the person remains alive after the second dose.

Following the failed execution attempt, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive, third-party review into what happened.

Lee also halted the state’s remaining scheduled executions for the rest of 2026.

The governor said carrying out a lawful sentence is one of the state’s most serious responsibilities and that executions must be conducted in a manner that is legal, consтιтutional and effective.

The incident came only months after Tennessee abandoned another execution attempt involving Tony B. Carruthers in May after officials were unable to establish intravenous access for more than an hour.

A LAST-MINUTE COURT BATTLE

Pike’s execution had already been the subject of an extraordinary series of court decisions before officials began the procedure.

The Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals initially granted a last-minute stay shortly before the scheduled execution.

The court’s decision was related to questions surrounding whether claims about Pike’s history of childhood Sєxual abuse and other mitigating evidence had received adequate consideration.

Tennessee appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which later vacated the stay, allowing the execution to proceed. Three justices dissented from the Supreme Court’s decision.

Pike had also challenged Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol, with her attorneys arguing that her medical and psychological circumstances created a substantial risk of serious suffering during the procedure. A Tennessee court had previously held an evidentiary hearing on those claims.

THE 1995 KILLING OF COLLEEN SLEMMER

Pike was convicted of killing 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in January 1995.

At the time, Pike was 18 years old and Slemmer was her classmate at a Job Corps training facility in Knoxville.

According to court records and prosecutors, Pike and two other young people were involved in the attack.

The case attracted national attention because of the unusually violent circumstances and the discovery of a pentagram carved into Slemmer’s body.

Pike has not denied responsibility for Slemmer’s killing.

Instead, her attorneys have argued that her sentence should be reconsidered in light of her age at the time of the crime, severe childhood trauma and mental-health history.

Pike’s former boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, was 17 when the crime occurred and received a life sentence rather than the death penalty. Shadolla Peterson, who was also involved and later testified against Pike, received probation.

PIKE HAD SAID SHE WAS AT PEACE

In the days before the attempted execution, Pike released a statement acknowledging the devastating consequences of Slemmer’s death.

She said she had spent years coming to terms with what she had done and expressed remorse for the impact on Slemmer’s family.

Pike also wrote that she was at peace with the possibility of death, although she said she was nervous about the execution process itself.

She was scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years.

That did not happen.

Instead, the execution ended with Pike still alive and being transported from the prison to a medical facility.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

For now, Pike remains alive and her death sentence has not been carried out.

The state has not announced a new execution date.

Gov. Lee’s independent review is expected to examine exactly what occurred during the procedure and whether Tennessee’s execution protocol was properly followed.

Meanwhile, Pike’s attorneys have continued pursuing legal challenges surrounding the execution and her death sentence.

The extraordinary failure has also renewed wider questions about lethal-injection procedures and the safeguards used when an execution does not proceed as intended.

For Colleen Slemmer’s family, however, the case remains tied to a killing that happened more than three decades ago and to a death sentence they have spent years waiting to see carried out.

For Pike, the attempted execution has now become another major chapter in a legal battle that has lasted for decades.

💔 STELLA PARTON BREAKS HER SILENCE — What She Said About Dolly’s Health Has Fans Looking Back

Dolly Parton’s Sister Breaks Silence What Really Happened - GMT - G1

Stella Parton was born May 4, 1949, the sixth of twelve children raised by Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton in Sevierville, Tennessee — a household defined by noise, limited money, and almost no privacy, the kind of environment that produced strong, determined personalities.

Stella was one of them.

By seven, she was appearing alongside her older sister Dolly on a Knoxville television program; by her teens, she was writing her own songs, though marriage and motherhood pulled music to the margins of her life for a stretch.

The dream never fully disappeared.

Stella Parton

In 1967, she recorded a gospel album with her mother and sisters, and later worked clubs in Washington, D.C., before founding her own record label in 1975 and releasing “I Want to Hold You in My Dreams Tonight,” which climbed to number nine on the country charts.

Long before any of that commercial success, Stella had already shown a willingness to take positions others avoided.

At 26, amid backlash against Australian singer Olivia Newton-John for winning recognition in country music, Stella recorded “Ode to Olivia” in her defense — a stand that offered her no career benefit and real risk of criticism, but one she took anyway simply because she believed staying silent was the wrong choice.

That instinct defined the rest of her career: hits like “The Danger of a Stranger” and “Steady as the Rain” (written by Dolly) built a genuine, independent following, including in the U.K., while Stella also worked in New York theater and spoke openly, often controversially, about poverty, domestic violence, and the treatment of women in the music industry.

She was named the Christian Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in 2004.

Through all of it, she remained defined publicly, more often than not, as simply “Dolly’s little sister” — a label she spent five decades quietly proving didn’t tell the full story.

That same directness is why her comments in the fall of 2025 carried real weight.

Stella had never positioned herself as the family’s image manager or spokesperson; she was, by reputation, someone who believed difficult truths shouldn’t stay hidden indefinitely.

What she described wasn’t dramatic or accusatory — it was a portrait of a woman who had spent years prioritizing everyone else’s needs over her own.

The context mattered.

Carl Dean, Dolly’s husband of nearly sixty years, died in March 2025 at 82, after a long illness during which Dolly had devoted herself almost entirely to his care.

She later acknowledged that in the process, she’d neglected her own health significantly.

The loss reverberated through the whole extended family — the Partons had lost three brothers in the years surrounding this period, compounding grief that, for a family that had once crowded twelve children into a single small home, meant losing pieces of a shared childhood one after another.

Stella herself went seven years without releasing new music during this stretch, later describing the period simply as one shaped by sorrow, while still speaking about the importance of finding moments of laughter within it.

Looking back, one moment reads very differently in hindsight than it did at the time: in late September 2025, Dolly postponed her planned Las Vegas residency, citing health challenges — a rare cancellation for a performer whose six-decade career had included very few of them.

At the time, most fans treated it as a minor, temporary setback.

Stella’s later reflections suggested the signs had actually been building for some time, visible to family in ways the public smile made easy to miss.

That concern crystallized publicly not long after, when Dolly’s younger sister Frieda posted a simple request on Facebook asking fans to pray for Dolly.

What looked at first like an ordinary, well-meaning gesture spread rapidly, sparking widespread speculation about how serious Dolly’s condition actually was.

Dolly herself responded directly within days, appearing in a video from a Grand Ole Opry commercial shoot, insisting with her familiar humor that she wasn’t finished yet — the now widely remembered “I ain’t dead yet” moment that briefly quieted public concern.

In the months that followed, the pattern repeated: reassuring updates about kidney stones, dehydration, and treatment, paired with continued work on new projects, right up until Dolly Parton’s death on August 25, 2026, at 80.

Looking back across that full timeline — the postponed residency, the family’s public worry, Stella’s own account of a sister who consistently deprioritized her own wellbeing — it becomes easier to see what the people closest to Dolly understood well before the rest of the world did: that the warmth and resilience the public saw every time she appeared on camera came at a real, largely invisible cost.
