A Tragic Death at the Center of a Notorious Florida Case

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA — Years after the violent deaths of two women shocked a Southwest Florida community, the case of convicted murderer Wade Wilson continues to draw attention. At the center of the official record is the death of Diane Ruiz, a woman whose life was taken during a series of crimes that would ultimately lead to one of Florida’s most closely followed capital murder trials.

Wilson was convicted in 2024 of murdering Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz in Cape Coral in October 2019. Although both victims were central to the prosecution’s case, the circumstances surrounding Ruiz’s death became especially significant in explaining the sequence of violence presented to jurors.

For prosecutors, the evidence was not simply about establishing Wilson’s idenтιтy as the perpetrator. It was about reconstructing what happened, demonstrating criminal intent, and explaining why the murders warranted the most severe punishment available under Florida law.
